Americans are highly motivated to lose weight more than ever. Each year, Americans spend about 35 billion dollars on weight loss products including books, pills, food, creams, and more. The pressure put on ‘being thin’ makes Americans willing to try anything – no matter what – no matter the cost. But what if there was an easier way to lose the inches?

Can the power of positive thinking lead to weight loss? Many experts believe this to be the case. For example, Psychologist Michael Gilewski, a clinical psychologist with Cedars-Sinai Medical Center’s Post-Acute Care Services, has found that the brain can achieve a state of habitual behavior through small successes—turning a once extraordinary effort into mere routine.

In other words, weight loss can be achieved through proper nutrition, exercise, and most importantly positive thinking.

To use the power of positive thinking, you first must identify the negative self talk, or the things you say to yourself that leads to self-sabotaging weight loss efforts

Start by compiling a list of all the negative thoughts your have about yourself:

My Negative Self Talk:
‘I can’t do It…’
‘I don’t have the time’
‘I must be thin…’
‘I need results now…’

‘I hate how I look…’

Now, take your ‘negatives’ list and turn it into your ‘potentials’ list. You do this by creating a positive self-image to every ‘negative’ you listed. Keep your list of potentials in a prominent place such as the refrigerator door or daily journal.

Negatives to Potentials List
I can’t do It… becomes I can do it!
I don’t have the time… becomes I will make the time!
I must be thin…becomesI want to look good and be healthy
‘I need results now…’
becomesI’ll take it one day at a time
I hate how I look becomes ‘I love myself, win or lose!

Lastly, in a ceremonial style, throw out the ‘negatives’ list. You are saying goodbye to the old you forever! Burn, trash, and destroy them. These negative habits are no longer going to be a part of your thinking about yourself.

Eliminating negative self talk and reinforcing positive affirmations will ensure that you are not self sabotaging your weight loss and diet efforts. Not only will you feel better about your self, but your positive thinking will lead to your success.
